Herman Rodent

Long, long ago in a land far away (UK) I came upon a small, fury rodent called Herman who subsequently accompanied me on travels around the World.

On a trip to Hong Kong in 1980-something he was kidnapped by the flight staff. I still have the ransom note.

In February 1989, Herman arrived in the states on an H1 visa and began his career as a model at Microsoft. He was photographed and scanned and became the first publicly viewed 256-color device-independent bitmap (DIB) for Windows. Here's a couple of the original bitmaps:

In later life, Herman worked in the MSDN group at Microsoft where he became an author. Some of his early works can still be found in the MSDN archives. Go to http://msdn.microsoft.com and do a search for Herman Rodent. He is credited with much of the work in Animation Techniques for Win32 which Nigel subsequently published.

These days, Herman is retired and lives in Colorado where he is working on USB devices.
